Is an NLP Degree Right For You?

You may be considering an NLP degree...here's what you should know:

The field of NLP has grown tremendously over the past 30 years. As it's grown the number of ways to learn NLP has expanded into DVD's, MP3 files, audio books, CD's, software programs and teleclasses.

In addition, NLP classes are being offered at several universities and colleges throughout the US and UK, some with degreed programs. This begs the question – what is the best way to learn NLP?

One danger in NLP training is allowing it to become too academic. NLP is really 'life skills' training and as such should be experiential in its nature.

When deciding to take an NLP class or seminar, here are some key points to consider:

• Does the training take a more experiential approach to NLP or a more academic?

• What is the training philosophy of the training organization?

• Is there a particular field that the NLP training is being applied to (business, sales, education, therapy)?

• What field are you planning on applying it to initially?

• What is your outcome from the training?

• What real-world experience do the trainers have in applying NLP?

• How do they deliver their training?

• When and where is the training held?

• Is there any follow-up support offered after the primary training is over?

• What type of environment (social and physical) is the training being held in?

• What is the cost of the training?

• What types of training materials and ‘extras’ are provided?

When deciding to take get an NLP degree or take a certification program another important consideration is the length of the training. Some training can take several weeks to complete, while other programs offer the same quality information in a much shorter time frame.

Whatever training you decide upon, be sure it fits your criteria, and not simply that of the trainers. Decide what things are most important to you about training and learning NLP and then discuss it with the training organization. Make sure your trainers are responsive to your objectives.

Remember when deciding where to take an NLP class or NLP degree or certification program be sure to get each of the above questions answered, to both clarify what you want, as well as the training organization you’re going to be working with.
