Strategies For Increasing Your NLP Skills
There are many different approaches to increasing your NLP skills.
Some tend to be more dynamic and others tend to be more academic in their approach. NLP is meant to be experiential. Though reading books on neuro lingusitic programming can give you a foundational understanding, by truly using and experiencing NLP, you can deepen your understanding and help get it wired into your system.
The following are a list of powerful strategies and exercises for deepening and developing NLP skills:
Strategy 1: Practice writing the various language patterns out. By practicing writing out embedded commands you will begin to hard wire it into your nervous system until it becomes natural for you.
Strategy 2: Start an NLP practice group in your area. This is a great way to practice and receive feedback on your NLP skills and identify areas for improvement.
Strategy 3: While out in the world spend time noticing the various submodalities that you’re taking in (i.e. visual, auditory, and kinesthetic). For example if you notice a beautiful flower, stop and spend 5 minutes just observing all the qualities of that flower.
Strategy 4: When interacting with other people, remember to just watch and listen. They will tell you exactly what's happening in their mind. Practice then communicating back to people in their language (i.e. pace physiology, vocal qualities, values, beliefs, meta model, etc) and note their response.
Strategy 5: As you’re engaged with other people, listen for the representational systems people use in their language and match and mirror it back naturally in the flow of conversation.
Strategy 6: Practice applying the Meta Model to a specific challenge you're facing. Identify a particular challenge or problem you’re facing and apply the Meta Model to the situation and notice the answers that open up and new perspectives that are generated.
Strategy 7: Practice reframing using the 'as-if' frame of someone you highly respect. When you're facing certain challenges use the 'as-if’ frame to step into the perspective of a person you respect. Notice the different options that open up as a result of looking at it from that perspective.
Strategy 8: Keep a journal of your NLP experiences and note what's having a positive impact on your life.
Strategy 9: Attend training that involves real-world applications of NLP skills. Do not attend NLP training that is overly academic in its approach.
NLP is an ongoing process of study and experience. By taking any or all of the above mentioned strategies and applying them to developing NLP skills, you will begin to notice a major difference in the results you’re generating in the world.
